California Firm to Digitize Backend Workflow of HII Shipbuilding Operations
HII has teamed with C3 AI to optimize its operations in Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions with digital solutions.
Under the terms, HII will receive the California-based company’s artificial intelligence-enabled capabilities to enhance planning, supply chain, labor allocation, and unmanned vehicle assembly.
HII’s decision to integrate C3 AI’s enterprise application software and expertise is based on a six-month production deployment in Mississippi, where the workforce utilized complex algorithms to refine schedules.
The project is expected to accelerate the ship development, processes, and results of HII in support of the US Navy’s “fleet readiness needs.”
It will also align with HII’s objective to increase throughput by 20 percent in fiscal year 2025.
Currently, HII is among the key industry partners for the force’s ongoing vessel production and sustainment programs. Its Newport News Shipbuilding segment is focused on nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and nuclear-powered submarine construction, while Ingalls Shipbuilding is centered on amphibious vessels and destroyers.
“Increasing shipbuilding throughput is a critical priority for HII and the US Navy,” said HII CEO Chris Kastner.
“We’re proud to partner with C3 AI to leverage data and digital capabilities like artificial intelligence in the urgent work of delivering ships to the US Navy.”
