The Netherlands has contracted Finnish satellite manufacturer ICEYE to supply a full suite of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems to boost sovereign space-based defense.
ICEYE is set to provide four 25-centimeter (9.8 inches) high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, with the first one delivered and launched into orbit aboard the Transporter-14 rideshare mission with SpaceX in June, just four months after the contract signing. This marks Amsterdam’s first operational military satellite mission.
The agreement also covers a local ground segment and antenna, a mobile ground segment with an autonomous, AI-driven imagery intelligence hub, as well as providing the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) access to ICEYE’s existing satellite constellation.
In addition, the Finnish company will strengthen collaboration with the local Dutch space and defense industry.
“This agreement is a step in European rearmament efforts for securing the defense of European nations. ICEYE is proud to provide the Netherlands with a sovereign and independent satellite ISR capability with the country’s first operational military satellite mission,” said CEO and co-founder Rafal Modrzewski.
He highlighted the company’s delivery of the first system component “at an unprecedented speed,” as well as ICEYE being “ideally positioned to provide European nations with a common and capable asset for space-based ISR activities.”
Meanwhile, RNLAF Commander Lieutenant General André Steur noted how the collaboration “recognizes the critical role of the space domain in national defense and underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to securing its interests in this vital new frontier of defense.”
