UK Military ‘Too Run Down’ to Lead Peacekeeping Mission in Ukraine: Ex-Army Chief

The UK military is “too run down” to lead any potential peacekeeping missions in Ukraine, the former head of the British Army has claimed.

The troops conduct the drill movement in open order on parade with the colours, at the pass out parade in Army Foundation College (AFC) Harrogate. More than 400 marched onto the parade square to mark the successful completion of their Phase One training. The prestigious ceremony is the culmination of months of intensive training, nurturing and education that is tailored exclusively to junior soldiers. Their final exercise is an intense, seven-day battle camp encompassing all they have learnt during their time at AFC Harrogate. The 17 and 18-year-olds will now go on to complete their trade training before joining regiments across the UK. The College based at Uniacke Barracks in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, provides a unique combination of military basic training and vocational training. It has two intakes a year in March and September and runs two types of courses. A 49-week course (including eight weeks holiday) for those joining the infantry, Royal Armoured Corps/Household Cavalry, Royal Artillery and some Royal Logistic Corps roles. A 23-week course (including three weeks holiday) for those joining courses with longer Phase 2 training – these are Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Engineers, Royal Signals, Adjutant General’s Corps, Royal Army Medical Corps, Army Air Corps and some Royal Logistic Corps roles. The military training syllabus teaches the Junior Soldiers the basics of soldiering, from how to look after their kit to how to safely handle and fire an assault rifle. They learn fieldcraft and take part in military exercises.

A line of Land Rover Wolf 4x4 Utility vehicles follow a Pinzgauer 6x6 All Terrain Truck on the Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area (DPTA) for Exercise Steadfast Defender 2024. Approximately 400-500 military vehicles and 1500 military personnel taking part in Ex STEADFAST DEFENDER line up on DPTA, Poland, for a Battle Group photo. 16,000 British soldiers are taking part in the largest set of NATO multi-national military manoeuvres in generation. Exercise Steadfast Defender will see these troops deploy across the entirety of Europe’s eastern flank, stretching from the far north of Norway, inside the Arctic Circle, all the way down to Georgia in the Caucasus’s. The British Army will be at the very forefront over the 5-month duration of Exercise Steadfast Defender, underpinning its position not only as the leading NATO European member state, but also one of its most potent. To put that into perspective; the Army is committing a 3* Headquarters, as well as two 2* Divisional and three 1* Combat Brigade Headquarters. These deployed formations will test, evaluate, and prove our ability to integrate and operate alongside our partners and allies, strengthening that collective and sustained commitment to European security. Along with those 16,000 troops, the UK will be sending massed armour including main battle tanks across to Europe aboard Ro-Ro vessels and loaded onto trains through the Channel Tunnel. Paratroopers will fly in from UK bases to seize strategic objectives and link up with NATO allied forces. Exercise Steadfast Defender will run from January through to May and comprise of 11 individual exercises in which British forces will participate alongside our NATO allies and partners.
