Kopin Wins $21.5M US Contract for Thermal Weapon Sight Systems

Kopin secured a $21.5-million follow-on contract to supply thermal imaging assemblies for a portable US military weapon system.

The Massachusetts-based company said the deal covers production of a custom eyepiece assembly for a major US defense contractor, though it did not identify the customer. The system is designed for detachable, man-portable thermal weapon platforms used in harsh battlefield conditions.

Kopin will manufacture the assemblies using its own microdisplays, optics, drive electronics, and ruggedized housing systems. According to the company, the modules help troops detect and identify targets during day and night operations.

The firm said that the deal strengthens US-based supply chains for mission-critical vision systems and reduces reliance on foreign-made components.

“By manufacturing these thermal weapon sight modules domestically, we strengthen the defense industrial base and ensure our warfighters have access to equipment that performs in the harshest conditions,” Iwan Dodd, SVP of Business Development and Strategy, said.

Kopin’s Defense Footprint

Kopin has expanded its defense business over the past year through several military-focused awards. It has so far delivered more than 400,000 defense-related vision systems and components across multiple programs.

In April, Kopin secured a $3.2-million initial contract to supply optical modules for a next-generation first-person view drone goggle system. The deal, its first in the drone sector, supports a program that could see up to 40,000 units delivered by 2028 to an unnamed partner.

The company received a $3.6-million order the month prior for helmet-mounted display systems for an undisclosed European military helicopter platform. Deliveries are set to begin in 2026 under a five-year contract, bringing the company’s total order backlog to more than $10 million.

Earlier, in September 2025, Kopin was awarded a $15.4-million contract from the US Army to supply ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED AR displays for ground soldiers.
