Ukraine Orders 8,000 Octopus Interceptor Drones to Boost Air Defense

Ukraine has ordered 8,000 Octopus interceptor drones to strengthen its air defense against incoming Shahed-type threats.

Kyiv said the purchase is aimed at expanding interception capacity for enemy drones, with the system already proven in combat use.

The Octopus interceptor uses automatic guidance to detect and destroy targets day and night, including under electronic warfare conditions and at low altitude.

Production will be scaled through 29 licensed Ukrainian companies, alongside support from the UK government. Four manufacturers have already signed supply contracts, enabling faster rollout from development to serial production.

The expansion is supported by a new government framework that allows military technologies to be transferred to domestic producers while retaining intellectual property rights.

Ukraine Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said this approach “makes it possible to quickly increase production and cover the need of the front.”

“At the same time, it is the development of the Ukrainian defense industry and an example of effective public-private partnership, when combat technologies are rapidly scaling into serial production,” he added.

From Battlefield Use to Industrial Scaling

The Octopus system has been integrated into a broader effort to turn combat-tested technologies into mass-produced air defense solutions.

In October 2025, Ukraine and the UK announced a partnership to mass-produce thousands of Octopus-100 interceptor drones.

This marks the first time a Ukrainian combat drone will be produced in a NATO country.

The deal comes as Ukraine’s defense companies face a surge in foreign partnership offers, driven by growing international demand for battlefield-tested technologies.

It also aligns with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s push to broaden Kyiv’s defense partnerships beyond Europe, including proposals to Gulf states for cooperation on air defense.
