Ukraine Could Provide Combat Experience, Technology to Japan
Ukraine has signaled its readiness to expand defense cooperation with Japan by sharing operational experience gained during the war with Russia, along with domestically developed military technologies, The Japan Times has reported.
According to Ukraine’s ambassador to Tokyo, Kyiv is offering operational lessons from high-intensity conflict alongside combat-tested systems, particularly in drones, counter-drone technologies, and air defense.
Potential areas of cooperation include joint research, technology sharing, and industrial partnerships.
Discussions between the two countries are underway, focusing on how Ukraine’s battlefield experience could support Japan’s evolving defense posture.
The potential for deeper cooperation comes as Tokyo seeks to adjust its defense framework.
While its post-World War II constitution formally limits the military to a defensive role, ongoing discussions to ease export restrictions and expand industrial cooperation point to a shift toward closer collaboration with partners.
Growing Security Concerns
The move comes as Japan steps up efforts to strengthen its military posture amid rising regional tensions, including increased Chinese naval activity in the East China Sea.
Earlier this month, Tokyo announced plans to deploy long-range Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles in Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu, by the end of March.
The deployment forms part of Japan’s push to develop “counterstrike” capabilities, allowing it to target enemy bases in the event of a direct attack.
Security concerns have also been shaped by recent political signals, particularly statements by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting possible Japanese involvement in a Taiwan contingency, while China continues to claim the island as its territory and has not ruled out the use of force.
