Hanwha, UNION to Expand 155mm Ammo Production Capacity in US

Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) and UNION Technologies in Texas have formed a strategic partnership to increase manufacturing capacity for 155-millimeter munitions in the US.

The companies said the collaboration aims to strengthen the US defense industrial base and build more resilient supply chains capable of scaling production for the American military and its allies.

Under the agreement, the consortium will initially focus on producing 155-millimeter shell metal components used in artillery systems.

A joint working group will coordinate technical integration, quality assurance, and near-term production priorities.

HDUSA, an offshoot of South Korean defense contractor Hanwha Group, contributes experience in defense manufacturing, including advanced components, artillery systems, and energetics.

Meanwhile, Dallas-based UNION develops automated, software-defined factories designed to scale manufacturing while maintaining traceability and production consistency.

‘Complementary Strengths’

Garrett Unclebach, chief executive officer of UNION, assured that the partnership will retain output to meet evolving defense requirements.

“Winning the production race requires factories that are modern by design: automated, traceable, and governed by real-time data,” Unclebach said.

“UNION builds those systems so capacity can expand fast while standards hold at mission scale. Our partnership with Hanwha Defense USA brings complementary strengths to grow 155mm metal-parts manufacturing now and increase future production pathways.”

HDUSA Munitions EVP Jeff Janey added that the collaboration supports Washington’s broader effort to increase yield in domestic ammunition production.

“HDUSA is committed to strengthening the defense manufacturing base and expanding capacity where it matters most,” Janey said.

“This partnership brings together UNION’s modern factory model and HDUSA’s defense industrial experience to support quality, scalability, and resilient production pathways for 155mm.”
