US Marines Procure Scorpion Light Mobile Mortar for Rapid Shoot-and-Scoot Firepower

The US Marine Corps has contracted Global Military Products to deliver its Scorpion Light 81mm mobile mortar system, enhancing the service’s ability to deliver rapid, precision indirect fires in distributed littoral operations.

Details of the agreement were not disclosed. The award follows the system’s evaluation during the October Transformation in Contact 2.0 exercises, an initiative that places experimental weapons and vehicles in the hands of troops to gather operational feedback before broader fielding decisions are made.

“This contract signals a step forward in the Marine Corps’ mortar modernization,” Director of Global Military Products James Knight was quoted as saying.

“This partnership delivers a revolutionary ‘shoot and scoot’ capability designed for expeditionary forces operating in high-threat, dispersed environments by providing critical indirect fire support to light infantry formations.”

Mounted on a Polaris MRZR Alpha 6×6 from Polaris Government & Defense, the Scorpion Light is designed to deliver precision indirect fire while enabling immediate displacement without slowing maneuver forces.

It can fire eight rounds and relocate in under two minutes, supporting rapid shoot-and-scoot operations.

The system features an automated digital fire control suite that supports rapid target acquisition and re-aiming with minimal crew involvement, along with Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact capability.

According to the company, the mortar is also compatible with third-party fire control systems, enabling seamless integration across a variety of command platforms.

With internal airlift capability aboard a Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey or a Boeing CH-47 Chinook, the integrated Scorpion Light and MRZR Alpha 6×6 platform enables rapid deployment to remote and austere environments.

Originally developed in the mid-2010s by Spanish defense firm Milanion NTGS as a lightweight automated mortar solution, the Scorpion Light has been fielded by French Special Forces and operators in Saudi Arabia and India, and is currently in use in Ukraine.
