Czech Republic to Send Drone-Hunting Aircraft to Ukraine

The Czech Republic has announced plans to supply Ukraine with combat aircraft capable of intercepting drones, Reuters reported.

The announcement came during a recent meeting in Kyiv between Czech President Petr Pavel and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Prague “can in relatively short time provide several medium combat planes, which are highly effective in fighting drones, and I believe we will manage to quickly and successfully conclude this issue,” Pavel said, adding that the country might also supply early-warning systems, including passive radar units.

No further details were provided on the number or type of aircraft, while Reuters reported that Pavel had previously indicated that Czech-made L-159 subsonic jets were under consideration for transfer.

Czech Support for Kyiv

Since the war in Ukraine began, Prague has provided Kyiv with equipment through several military aid programs.

Among the initiatives, a Czech-led program is supplying large-caliber ammunition funded by NATO allies, while a Czech defense firm has opened a representative office in Ukraine to support joint manufacturing and begin local production.

In October last year, the Czech Republic announced it would build and deliver a modern Earth observation satellite for Ukraine within a year, aimed at enhancing Kyiv’s intelligence and reconstruction capabilities.

The satellite will include synthetic aperture radar, optical sensors, radiation detectors, and radio frequency monitoring systems.

In April 2025, Prague completed the transfer of all its T-72M1 main battle tanks to Kyiv.

The full package included 86 tanks inherited by the Czech Republic after the Cold War, some of which were upgraded to the T-72M4 configuration.
