Rafael Ships First Operational Iron Beam Laser Weapon to Israel

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has delivered the first Iron Beam air defense system to the Israel Defense Forces, following the transfer’s confirmation in early December.

The event marked the platform’s formal integration into Tel Aviv’s multi-layered air defense network, alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow.

Iron Beam, which has proven effective in intercepting rockets, mortars, and unmanned aerial systems during a series of trials and real-life operations, uses a high-energy laser to neutralize threats at extended ranges.

The weapon also features an electro-optical targeting system for maximum precision and cost-efficiency.

Rafael developed the weapon in collaboration with the Israel Ministry of Defense’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development.

‘Historic Milestone’

During the handover ceremony, Defense Minister Israel Katz called the delivery a “historic milestone,” emphasizing the Iron Beam as the world’s first high-power laser system to reach operational status.

He highlighted its potential to change the defense landscape, particularly in the field of affordable, precise neutralization of smaller projectiles.

“This monumental achievement changes the rules of engagement and delivers a critical message to our enemies — near and far alike — do not challenge us, or face severe consequences. Our defensive strength is matched by our offensive capability,” Katz said.

“This message reverberates from Tehran to Sana’a to Beirut. We remain committed to preserving Israel’s security and technological edge, ensuring we stand resolute against future challenges.”

Officials noted that Israel continues to expand its technological edge, with further advancements in laser defense already underway.
