US Clears $34.5M Humvee Sale to Lebanon
The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale of M1151A1 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (Humvees) and related equipment to Lebanon for approximately $34.5 million.
The package covers an additional 90 Humvees, building on a previously implemented order for 50, totaling 140 vehicles. The original sale was valued at $12.26 million, with the major defense equipment portion valued at $10.85 million.
Moreover, the sale includes the RF-7850M-HH multiband handheld radio; GPS receiver; Quicklook electronic counter-countermeasures waveform; spare parts, repair parts, and related logistics and program support.
It also enables broader opportunities for joint tactical and operational training between US and Lebanese forces.
AM General is the principal contractor.
Rapid Threat Response
The M1151A1 variant features an expanded chassis, improved engine, and higher payload capacity.
It is designed to carry heavier armor kits and weapons, and has been fielded in several countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the light, highly mobile Humvees will enable the Lebanese Armed Forces to respond quickly to threats along its borders or in sensitive areas, while also supporting counter-terrorism operations.
Earlier this month, Washington approved a potential $90.5-million sale of M1085A2 and M1078A2 medium tactical vehicles to Beirut.
These larger, heavier trucks will help the Lebanese Armed Forces transport troops and equipment across rough terrain, enhance mobility, and support rapid responses to perimeter threats, counter-terrorism missions, and joint training with US forces.
