Sweden has contracted Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace a contract to provide its flagship Protector RS4 remote-controlled weapon stations for the Swedish Army’s Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) fleet.
Valued at over 400 million krona ($42.7 million), the agreement supports the service’s transition of its mechanized units from the current Protector Nordic (Vapenstation VS01) configuration to a more advanced solution.
The deal includes options for additional units for other army platforms.
Once delivered, the RS4s will be fielded on three CV90 variants, designated as Vapenstation VS02.
The system introduces integrated sensors, extended engagement ranges, and support for several weapon types while allowing operators to remain under armor.
“The weapon station VS02 adds a significant capability increase to all platforms on which it is integrated,” said Alexander Sandercock, project manager at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
The tracked CV90, developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds, forms the core of Sweden’s infantry fighting vehicle inventory and exists in infantry, reconnaissance, and command variants.
Sweden has also ordered new CV9035 vehicles and donated older CV9040s to Ukraine, prompting efforts to replenish and upgrade its fleet.
The Protector RS4
Kongsberg’s RS4 weighs between 135 and 190 kilograms (298 to 419 pounds), depending on its variant, and has a height of 505 to 765 millimeters (20 to 30 inches) when excluding weaponry and ammunition.
It is equipped with advanced camera and sensor capabilities, offering flexibility to meet the specific requirements of customers for day and night operations.
The RS4 provides 360-degree rotation, offering coverage at a speed of 90 degrees per second.
Its elevation range spans from negative 20 to 60 degrees, with the ability to adjust at a speed of 70 degrees per second, ensuring precise targeting and rapid response in combat.
The RS4 supports a range of advanced systems, including the Browning M2 and WKM-B 12.7-millimeter heavy guns, the M249 5.56-millimeter light guns, and the M240, UKM-2000C, and M134 Gatling 7.62-millimeter machine guns.
Users can also integrate the turret with MK19, MK47, and H&K GMG 40-millimeter grenade launchers with airburst functionality, in addition to various non-lethal effectors.
The system further accommodates the M240 6.62-millimeter coaxial kit and provides integration options for anti-tank guided missiles.
