Archer, Karem Partner on Military-Grade Rotor Tech for Next-Gen VTOL

Archer Aviation has signed an agreement with Karem Aircraft to integrate the latter’s military-grade rotor and tiltrotor systems into Archer’s planned autonomous, hybrid-propulsion vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

The agreement gives Archer access to key elements of Karem’s tiltrotor architecture that have been previously tested and evaluated by the US Army.

Archer said it will combine that know-how with patented systems recently acquired from Overair and Lilium to build a platform that can provide higher speed, longer range, effective payload, and reduced heat and noise, which are critical for complex flight conditions.

Among Archer’s defense offerings is the Midnight electric VTOL, which has already been supplied to the US Air Force. Karem’s work has also been demonstrated on the tactical level for the MQ-1 Predator fixed-wing and A160 Hummingbird rotary-wing drones.

“As we build the next generation of dual-use vertical lift aircraft, partnering with the pioneers who have shaped modern rotorcraft is essential,” Archer CEO Adam Goldstein said.

“Karem’s military-grade rotor systems are among the most advanced Army-validated technologies in the world. This collaboration strengthens our dual-use strategy and accelerates our path toward fielding an aircraft built for the contested environments of tomorrow.”

Classified VTOL Project

The partnership follows Archer and Anduril Industries’ work on a project to supply a modern unmanned hybrid VTOL for the US military.

This secretive effort will support a potential Pentagon program, as confirmed by Goldstein to Axios last July, without naming the initiative or specifying its mission requirements.

Supporting Anduril-EDGE Venture

Meanwhile, Archer secured a contract in November to supply its electric powertrain to Anduril and EDGE Group’s joint venture for the Omen unmanned aerial system, marking the first time Archer has released its flagship solution to another defense program.

EDGE Group’s origin country UAE will source about 50 Omen units from that venture.
