Romania Orders $260M HISAR Corvette From Turkey

Romania has finalized a 223-million-euro ($260 million) contract with Turkey to acquire a HISAR-class corvette, including crew training and a comprehensive logistics support package.

The acquisition is part of Romania’s multi-annual program to equip its naval forces with modern ships capable of patrolling and protecting critical maritime infrastructure, as well as performing combat missions in the Black Sea.

According to Romania’s Ministry of National Defence, the total purchase price covers the cost of the ship, personnel training, and a logistic support package to ensure the vessel is fully operational upon delivery.

Approval for the procurement was granted by the Homeland Defence Supreme Council in March 2025, and the joint defense committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies gave unanimous approval in September.

HISAR Class Corvette

The HISAR class corvette is a multi-role warship displacing around 2,300 tons, with a length of 99 meters (324 feet) and equipped for anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.

Its armament includes an OTO Melara 76 mm main gun, Rolling Airframe Missile launchers, Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes, and a mix of remotely operated weapon stations for close-in defense.

The vessel’s sensor suite integrates modern 3D radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems capable of detecting and tracking air and surface threats while supporting networked operations.

Turkish HISAR corvettes have been actively deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea, conducting maritime security operations, escort missions, and anti-submarine patrols.

They have participated in NATO exercises such as Dynamic Manta in the Mediterranean and bilateral drills with allied navies, demonstrating capabilities in high-end sea warfare and interoperability.

The ships have also been used for protecting critical maritime infrastructure, including offshore energy installations, and monitoring strategic shipping lanes.
