Ukraine’s Armed Forces to Allow Foreign Volunteers to Choose Unit, Role
The Ukrainian Ground Forces has launched a new system that gives foreign volunteers greater flexibility in their service, allowing them to select their brigade, operational area, and role based on their skills and experience.
The measure is designed to improve integration with Ukrainian troops, provide equal service opportunities, and make more efficient use of personnel.
Foreign fighters were initially incorporated under emergency procedures introduced in 2022.
According to Ukrainian officials, the early measures enabled rapid deployment of volunteers, but evolving battlefield conditions and changes within the defense forces have highlighted the need for a more structured system.
“We will continue to provide transparent, understandable, and effective service mechanisms for everyone who makes a conscious choice to stand alongside the Ukrainian military in the fight for freedom and security,” stated the Ukrainian Army.
Earlier this year, Kyiv reported that more than 8,000 foreign volunteers had joined the country’s armed forces, with the total across all branches likely to be at least double that number.
Additionally, monthly recruitment of foreign volunteers has reportedly risen from between 100 and 150 to around 600.
Detailed information, including which countries have contributed the most, is being kept confidential for security reasons.
Foreign Nationals Joining Russian Forces
As Kyiv updates its procedures for integrating foreigners into its armed forces, reports indicate that Russia is also recruiting foreign nationals for its operations in Ukraine.
According to South Korean and Western intelligence agencies, North Korea deployed more than 10,000 troops to Russia last year, primarily to the Kursk region, with Seoul estimating that up to 2,000 of these soldiers were killed in combat.
Kyiv has also reported that around 1,338 Belarusian nationals joined Russian forces, with roughly a quarter of them reportedly killed.
