Leonardo DRS, Hofmann Team Up on Next-Gen Naval Propulsion for AUKUS
Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering have signed an agreement to jointly develop next-generation naval propulsion systems in support of AUKUS defense cooperation between Australia, the UK, and the US.
The initiative combines Leonardo’s expertise in electric and hybrid propulsion with Hofmann’s large-scale manufacturing capabilities in Western Australia to bolster allied naval power and industrial capacity.
The initiative aims to meet the increasing power demands of partner fleets while reinforcing shipbuilding and supply chain resilience across the AUKUS framework.
It will focus on research, design, and new technologies for electric, hybrid, and steam-powered propulsion, alongside potential joint development and export projects aligned with shared defense priorities.
Leonardo DRS, which supplies propulsion systems for the US Navy’s Columbia-class submarines and South Korea’s new warships, said the effort will help secure key technologies and expand Australia’s ability to support future surface and underwater platforms.
Jon Miller, senior vice president and general manager at Leonardo DRS Naval Power business unit, emphasized that the collaboration goes beyond boosting vessel performance.
“It’s a strategic necessity to ensure new and existing ships and submarines maintain operational superiority in an increasingly complex and high-tech battlespace,” he said.
Karl Hofmann, director of operations at Hofmann Engineering, added that the agreement marks “a major milestone for Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering and the trajectory of Australia’s sovereign capability, strengthening the AUKUS bond and strategic partnership between the US and Australia.”
