US Air Force Base in Guam to Get New $211 Million Communications Hub
The US Department of Defense has awarded Hawaii-based Nan Inc. a $211-million contract to build a new communications center at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam.
The infrastructure project will be funded in phases, beginning with $91.3 million in construction funds that were obligated at the time of the award and will remain available beyond the current fiscal year.
Work for the contract will be coordinated with the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Pacific at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.
The initiative is scheduled for completion by March 2030.
Recent Projects
Washington’s award comes after a series of smaller Andersen efforts in recent weeks totaling $88 million.
That covers $34.3 million to repair the Rota dormitory, which US Navy Secretary John Phelan described as being in unacceptable condition during a May visit, Hagåtña-based Pacific Daily News reported.
The Pentagon also signed a separate $36.9-million contract to renovate the Rota’s neighboring dormitory, Palau.
Additional awards involving local firms in Guam include $19 million to upgrade a generator and switchgear, $17 million to repair tie feeder circuits, $9.9 million for booster pump and tank repairs, and $8 million to fix underground power systems.
Reinforcing Regional Presence
The upcoming communications center is part of the US government’s broader military investment in Guam, which serves as a critical hub for American forces in the Western Pacific.
Alongside the Andersen installation, the Micronesian territory is home to Naval Base Guam, which provides forward operating positions for bombers, submarines, and other assets across the region.
Part of the revamp is prioritizing Guam’s defenses against emerging threats. As of July, contracts tied to the planned 360-degree missile defense system for the island had surpassed $1.7 billion. The total program cost has been estimated at $8 billion, according to Pacific Daily News.
As of this year, Guam hosts about 9,700 US troops across all service branches.
