Indra has officially acquired a new manufacturing plant in the northwestern Spanish region of Asturias to expand its vehicle production capability in support of European partners.
The purchase, made in agreement with local heavy industry firm Duro Felguera, includes the transfer of its over 150 skilled professionals to Indra.
Located in Gijón, the factory encompasses 75,000 square meters (807,293 square feet) of land and includes 23,000 square meters (247,569 square feet) of covered space.
Indra noted that the site will be further modernized to assemble various types of tactical ground-based vehicles, including tracked and wheeled platforms.
At the same time, training projects will be launched to familiarize the workforce with defense projects, along with investments in new machinery, equipment, and upgrades to the production areas.
“Today marks the beginning of the commitment I announced to bring together the manufacturing of high-value military land vehicles in Asturias, using 100% Spanish technology, through Indra Land Vehicles,” said José Vicente de los Mozos, CEO at Indra Group.
“It is a reflection of our commitment to Spanish talent and domestic manufacturing capabilities in a region with a long and rich industrial history we must revitalize, one with a network of experienced suppliers and highly specialized professionals that our country needs.”
Supporting Operational Autonomy, Sovereignty
The company noted that the move reinforces its role in Spain’s and Europe’s defense industries and serves as the first step in making Asturias the center of Indra’s land systems production.
Currently, Indra is one of the European defense market’s top companies in developing electronic systems that bring automation and smart technology to modern armored vehicles.
It plays a role in the region’s key security programs, including the multinational FAMOUS armored personnel carrier and MARTE main battle tank programs.
The firm is also a major partner in TESS Defence, a local Spanish consortium contracted to develop and produce Madrid’s Dragon 8×8 wheeled combat vehicles.
“This acquisition is aligned with the strengthening of our industrial capabilities, one of the objectives of our Leading the Future Strategic Plan, which will help us to continue to grow and become more competitive,” de los Mozos stated.
“We have to be able to produce more and faster, to strengthen our operational autonomy while also doing our bit to ensure the sovereignty of Spain and Europe.”
