Pentagon Orders Canadian Commander3 XL Drone

Canadian unmanned aerial systems developer Draganfly has secured a contract to provide its Commander3 XL platform for a major US Department of Defense branch.

The order supports Washington’s ongoing efforts to adopt next-generation platforms that integrate monitoring and active operational functions.

Once delivered, the Commander3 XL will support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions with added tasking capabilities, advancing the American military’s push to deploy flexible autonomous systems in combat.

Draganfly is headquartered in Saskatchewan and has recently announced the construction of a facility in Tampa, Florida, to expand its support for North American defense and security partners.

“This delivery further validates the Commander3 XL’s reliability and versatility for frontline applications,” Draganfly CEO Cameron Chell stated.

“We’re honored to support the [Department of Defense’s] commitment to autonomous and semi-autonomous multi-mission systems that enhance operational effectiveness.”

The Commander3 XL is built for rapid deployment and heavy-lift operations, with a payload capacity of 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

Its modular design allows operators to equip it with a wide range of tools, including optical and thermal cameras, LiDAR systems, and cargo delivery modules.

The drone reaches speeds of up to 45 miles (72 kilometers) per hour and can remain airborne for around 35 minutes unloaded, or roughly 20 minutes when carrying maximum payload.

Its hybrid variant features a Pegasus 70cc liquid-cooled engine capable of running on gasoline or heavy fuel, improving endurance and flexibility in the field.

Commander3 XL has foldable arms and a transport-ready frame, and can be launched in environments with light rain and snow.
