Russia Launches Mi-8/17 Helicopter Replacement Program

Russia has begun developing a next-generation multirole helicopter to replace its aging Mi-8/17 fleet, according to Russian media.

Designated as the Mi-80, the new rotorcraft is modeled after the Mi-171A3 and incorporates a modern design to match the evolving airspace, including new blades and powerful engines.

Production of the system will have reduced costs, with primary assembly to be managed by its precursor’s developers, Kazan Helicopter Plant and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant.

Multiple sources said that the airframe has a maximum takeoff weight of 14 tons (28,000 pounds), a reinforced fuselage structure, and several parts made of polymer composites.

It will also have impact-protected fuel tanks as well as adjusted rotor placement for efficient flight, promoting safe and agile functionality.

Reports noted that the Mi-80 program is still in its technical specification phase, as Moscow resolves associated monetary setbacks to construct the helicopter. It is expected that the development will run for five years once funding is in place.

In Russia, the air force operates over 700 Mi-8/17 helicopters, with more than 800 additional units estimated to be in service across other military branches and state agencies.

Globally, approximately 3,000 of the Moscow-developed helicopters are in use by various international operators.
