Poland Earmarks $660M to Boost 155mm Ammo Production Through Local Companies

Poland’s Armaments Group (PGZ) is investing in state-owned companies to increase the production of 155-millimeter ammunition for its armed forces.

Sourced from the Ministry of State Assets, the funding amounts to 2.4 billion złoty ($662.7 million). It will be distributed to four entities to “expand and create new infrastructure and technological lines” for the project.

Included in the framework is the establishment of three factories based on existing plants, each expected to deliver a substantial increase in manufacturing capacity for shells, associated raw materials, and combat agents.

Approximately $375 million of the fund will be awarded to Dezamet Metal Works to increase its supply of large-caliber rounds. In comparison, $244.9 million will be allocated to high-volume production of 155-millimeter bodies under defense technology giant Mesko.

Meanwhile, TNT and explosives manufacturer Nitro-Chem Chemical Works will receive $31.2 million to acquire technological lines, and Gamrat Special Production Plant will get $18.2 million for the construction, integration, and activation of gas generators.

Each subsidy will cover critical infrastructure, machinery, and other equipment required to fulfill future ammo orders.

The first tranche of these monetary packages will be disbursed to the consortium this month, supporting the implementation of business plans and necessary processes.

‘Lasting Base’

Polish State Assets Agency Minister Jakub Jaworowski emphasized that the project will facilitate the rapid supply and replenishment of artillery shells to Poland’s warfighters, while enhancing the NATO country’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

“When assessing the applications, we took into account in particular the fact that, according to the presented business plans, the entire production process will take place in Poland,” the minister explained.

“This will allow for independence from foreign suppliers and building a lasting base for national autonomy. This is also in line with the “repolonization” plan, and in the longer term – after meeting the needs reported by the Polish Army – it creates opportunities for the export of this type of ammunition.”

Acquiring 120mm Tank Rounds

Warsaw’s latest move followed a $39.9-million investment to procure 120-millimeter tank rounds from PGZ subsidiary Mesko in June.

The armor-piercing capability will be dedicated to Leopard 2 main battle tanks in service under the Polish military and is reportedly compatible with the smoothbore cannon installed aboard the M1 Abrams battle tank.

Shipment of these shells is expected to be completed between 2026 and 2027.
