Ukraine to Recruit 15,000 Operators Under Drone Warfare Strategy

Ukraine is recruiting 15,000 personnel to expand its “Drone Line” strategy, aimed at creating a 10- to 15-kilometer (6- to 9-mile) kill zone to stop Russian forces before they reach frontline positions.

Kyiv said the unmanned aerial system-assisted initiative will ensure continuous support along the battle zone, maintaining lethality against threats while reducing risks to troops.

The effort, launched directly under President Volodymyr Zelensky, now involves several units within the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces.

The government specified that the latest recruitment drive targets drone operators, engineers, medics, information technology specialists, drivers, and other related roles.

Throughout the process, Ukraine’s decentralized system will enable individual units to recruit directly, creating competition for a limited pool of volunteers.

Initial training will take place at three special facilities equipped with modern simulators and combat-based instruction, while additional competency activities will continue in their respective teams once assigned.

“Unmanned technologies have become a key factor in modern warfare,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence said.

“The Drone Line project is intended to align innovation with the needs of the military, while those willing to join the Defence Forces can find their place within this system.”

15,000 Drones Bound for Ukraine

The move comes after a March 2026 announcement by the country’s ally Germany to supply the Ukrainian military with 15,000 interceptor drones in support of its defense against Moscow’s attacks.

The package includes logistics support, development, and training for Ukrainian troops.

Production of the fleet will take place in the war-torn country.

UGV Expansion

In parallel with the Drone Line, Ukraine is scaling terrestrial robotics capability, with plans to procure approximately 25,000 unmanned ground vehicles in the first half of the year to handle frontline logistics.

The decision follows Ukrainian land drones capturing an enemy position without troop involvement, marking a first-of-its-kind operation.
