Romania has awarded Raytheon a $168-million contract for the purchase of Patriot air and missile defense defense system components.
The agreement covers radar, command and control systems, launchers, test equipment, and support services for the NATO country.
The deal marks Bucharest’s second Patriot order from Raytheon this year, following an April contract that involved a similar package in support of its effort to strengthen its multi-layered defense capabilities.
Romania is under contract for seven Patriot systems, with deliveries beginning in 2020 and completion expected by 2030.
The nation received four of these systems in 2023, including one provided as military aid to enhance Ukraine’s military assets amid the Russian invasion.
“Patriot remains the air and missile defense system of choice worldwide,” Raytheon Global Patriot Senior Vice President Pete Bata stated.
“Our focus is on delivering proven, combat-tested capabilities to support readiness and enhance collective security across Europe.”
The Patriot Defense System
Raytheon’s Patriot system is a mobile surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile defense platform that integrates advanced radars, an antenna mast group, a control station, and launchers.
It can intercept targets at altitudes up to 36,000 meters (118,110 feet), with speeds reaching 6,170 kilometers (3,834 miles) per hour and a range of 160 kilometers (99 miles).
Since its introduction in the 1980s, the Patriot system has been upgraded to address evolving threats and had over 1,100 systems produced.
It is currently operational in 19 countries, including its country of origin, the US.
In 2025, Raytheon secured new contracts for the Patriot system from Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
