Denmark Orders Wheeled Leguan Military Bridge Layers From KNDS

KNDS Deutschland has secured a 33-million-euro ($38.6 million) contract to deliver three Leguan bridge layers for the Danish Armed Forces.

Tactical bridge layers provide mobile, temporary bridges, enabling military units to cross obstacles and maintain mobility in challenging terrain.

The order covers the latest-generation Leguan mounted on a 10×10 wheeled truck developed by Tatra Defence Vehicles of the Czech Republic. It also includes logistics support and tooling to sustain the vehicles in service.

The agreement carries an option for three additional wheeled bridge layers with Leguan sets and associated equipment valued at 25 million euros ($29.2 million), according to KNDS.

Copenhagen is expected to decide in 2026 whether it will exercise the option.

Additionally, the procurement framework is available to other Scandinavian countries should they choose to join the arrangement through Denmark.

The Leguan Modular Bridge

KNDS’ Leguan system has a standard configuration offered with the Leopard 2 main battle tank chassis as its vehicle mount.

Operated by a two-person crew, the system deploys an automatic folding bridge that can span up to 14 meters (46 feet).

In the field, it supports vehicles up to NATO Military Load Classification 50, equivalent to roughly 45 tonnes (99,208 pounds) for tracked platforms and 53 tonnes (116,845 pounds) for wheeled vehicles.

Denmark already operates the Leguan on the Leopard 2 platform, but the latest order highlights growing interest in the newer configuration, marking the wheeled variant’s debut in the country’s military.

“The new wheeled LEGUAN generation secures a modern and optimized combat support and furthermore is perfectly suited to perform disaster relief operations,” KNDS said on its product portal.

“Nineteen armed forces have already chosen the LEGUAN system after extensive trials because of its outstanding performance and easy handling. Teaming, pooling and sharing of resources have become reality to the benefit of all users.”
