Thales, Navantia Team Up for Thai Navy Fleet Upgrade

Thales and Navantia have teamed up to upgrade the Royal Thai Navy’s fleet, marking their first collaboration in Thailand.

Under the deal, Thales will provide three identification friend or foe (IFF) systems as part of the modernization of two Pattani-class offshore patrol vessels and the upgrade of the HTMS Chang landing platform dock, with Navantia responsible for the Chang’s refurbishment.

The IFF systems include the TSA3520 interrogator, designed for medium- and long-range surveillance and identification, and the TSC4000 transponder, deployed on various ships and aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles.

Both components will be integrated into the ships’ existing radars and combat management systems, allowing the Royal Thai Navy to quickly identify vessels and potential threats and improve situational awareness.

The collaboration builds on earlier agreements between Bangkok and the two companies.

Thales already provides systems for the Royal Thai Navy, including radars, sonars, mine-hunting equipment, and fire control and command systems.

Earlier this month, the company secured a contract to supply an integrated platform management system for the HTMS Chakri Naruebet aircraft carrier.

The system will centralize control of propulsion, electrical systems, auxiliary machinery, and damage-control functions, supporting the modernization of the nearly 30-year-old vessel.

In April, Spanish firm Navantia announced it would assist Thailand in upgrading the landing platform dock HTMS Chang.

The contract covers the supply and integration of the ship’s combat management, surveillance, and fire control systems, along with other key technologies.
