Spain’s Navantia, Alpha Team Up on Ship-Launched Drone Tech

Shipbuilder Navantia has partnered with fellow Spanish company Alpha Unmanned Systems to jointly develop and integrate ship-borne drone technologies for naval use.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for collaboration between the two companies. This combines Navantia’s naval expertise with Alpha’s tactical unmanned systems to strengthen their offerings for domestic and international clients.

As part of the deal, Alpha’s A900 unmanned helicopter will be evaluated for inclusion in Navantia’s naval technology portfolio. Built for operation from naval vessels, the A900 can take off and land from moving ships and continue missions in challenging sea and weather conditions.

Juan de la Cueva, Navantia’s commercial and business development director, said the partnership is “an important step forward in integrating unmanned technologies into our naval platforms.”

“The A900’s integration into Navantia’s fleet systems is expected to enhance the surveillance reach and situational awareness of future naval platforms,” he said.

A900 UAV Helicopter’s Operational Footprint

The A900 unmanned helicopter is designed for maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, capable of carrying electro-optical and infrared sensors, maritime radar, and communications relays.

It is already in service with navies and border control forces in 12 countries

Among its deployments, the A900 has supported Spain’s maritime safety and border control missions in the Mediterranean and has been used by the Greek Coast Guard for coastal surveillance.

It has also been tested by Indonesia in 2024 for coastal and artillery defense.
