Nordic Countries Announce Joint Drone Procurement Initiative

Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have agreed to jointly procure unmanned aircraft systems and related technologies.

The agreement was signed in Helsinki, the Finnish Ministry of Defence announced.

The joint procurement initiative aims to stimulate greater industrial production, which is expected to reduce overall acquisition costs for the participating countries.

“We will facilitate multinational operations in the Nordic region by enhancing cooperation in the field of unmanned aircraft systems,” the ministry stated in a press release.

“In addition to actual procurements, cooperation will also be intensified in the fields of research and development, training and exchange of information.”

Micro Drone Procurement

In a separate initiative, the four countries are acquiring micro drones through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency partnership, as well as via framework agreements under the Danish Ministry of Defence.

In addition to strengthening defense, the joint procurement of drones aims to create new opportunities for industry and scientific research.

The initiative follows airspace violations by suspected Russian drones in several European countries, including Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

Heightened security concerns in the region have prompted measures such as the establishment of a joint brigade by Sweden and Finland along the border with Russia to strengthen defense preparedness.
