GA-ASI, Netherlands Partner to Develop Small Uncrewed Aircraft

The Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) have teamed up to develop a small uncrewed aircraft system for multi-role intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

The planned aircraft will be low-cost and capable of carrying various payloads. GA-ASI chose Dutch company VDL Defentec, which specializes in military and special-purpose vehicles, to manufacture the small platform, as it shares its expertise in design, manufacture, logistics, and support.

Additionally, the partnership covers the establishment of an uncrewed aerial system manufacturing capability, as well as plans to scale the platform for high-volume production.

The aircraft is expected to fly by the end of this year and begin low-rate initial production in 2026 in the US and the Netherlands.

“This contract is the first step in a strategic partnership with the Dutch MoD that will ultimately contribute to the defense of Ukraine and NATO by creating a versatile European defense system,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Minister for Arms Procurement and Personnel, Gijs Tuinman, noted that the collaboration will increase “innovative SUAS capabilities and [advance] technical know-how in the Netherlands.”

The deal strengthens transatlantic defense cooperation between a major US defense tech firm and a European NATO ally.

Moreover, it shows Amsterdam’s intent to co-develop rather than just procure US equipment, reflecting a broader trend of developing European defense capabilities.

“This project is an example of strategic trans-Atlantic collaboration that supports our defense and technological base as we contribute to the defense of Ukraine and NATO by creating a versatile European defense system and working with a strong US partner,” Tuinman added.
