Indra to Enhance Europe’s Space Tracking, Satellite Navigation

Indra Group has received contracts with the European Space Agency (ESA) to boost Europe’s space surveillance and satellite navigation capabilities.

One contract covers the modernization of the Spanish Space Surveillance and Tracking Surveillance Radar, or S3TSR, to its next-generation version.

This radar, considered one of the most advanced in Europe, tracks objects in low Earth orbit and is part of Spain’s contribution to the European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking program.

The upgrade will allow it to detect objects as small as 44 centimeters (17 inches) from nearly 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) away, enhancing protection for satellites against accidental debris or potential hostile actions.

Another contract falls under ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Program, which focuses on engineering a navigation receiver for low Earth orbit satellites that can process high-precision signals.

This approach will enhance positioning, navigation, and timing for satellites and ground systems, providing more reliable services for critical sectors including transportation, communications, and infrastructure management.

“As part of the company’s commitment to ensuring the security of all citizens, space and its synergies with defence are a strategic priority for Indra Group,” said José Vicente de los Mozos, CEO of Indra Group.

“Together with ESA, we will continue advancing along this decisive path to strengthen Europe’s security and strategic autonomy in the space domain.”
