Thales Hits 100th CAPTAS Sonar Order for Anti-Submarine Warfare

Thales has received an order for its 100th Combined Active-Passive Towed Array Sonar (CAPTAS) system from an undisclosed customer.

Available in multiple variants, the CAPTAS family is a variable-depth sonar system designed for anti-submarine warfare, offering 360-degree active and passive long-range detection.

The system provides acoustic detection over distances exceeding 60 kilometers (37 miles), enabling submarines to be identified before entering restricted or strategic areas.

This early warning capability strengthens maritime security by giving naval forces time to detect and respond to potential threats in both deep and coastal waters.

Several NATO countries operate CAPTAS, using it to coordinate multiple sensors for more effective underwater surveillance.

It is currently in service with 17 navies worldwide, including France, Italy, the UK, and the US.

CAPTAS can be installed on a wide range of naval platforms, from vessels under 1,000 tons to large warships.

It can equip corvettes, frigates, destroyers, support ships, and unmanned surface vehicles.

A containerized mission module enables rapid installation and deployment, allowing navies to adapt the system to changing operational requirements.

The system also integrates seamlessly with other Thales solutions, including Hull-Mounted Sonars, FLASH dipping sonar, and SonoFlash sonobuoys, supporting interoperability and coordinated operations across international naval forces.

Featuring a modular and cyber-secure design, CAPTAS can incorporate new technologies and adapt to evolving mission requirements.

The integration of AI tools and advanced data analysis enhances its interface and decision-support functions, allowing crews to manage complex situations more effectively.

These automated and intuitive features also help reduce workload and simplify operations throughout the system’s service life.
