Ukraine Eyes Drone ‘Kill Zone’ to Stop Russian Attacks

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has unveiled a plan to create continuous unmanned aerial system (UAS) lines aimed at halting Russian advances and pressuring Moscow toward negotiations.

The so-called “Kill Zone,” potentially covering 10, 15, or 30 kilometers (6, 9, or 19 miles), is designed to block enemy movement across key territory, strengthen airspace security, and enable long-range strikes on Russian positions.

The initiative focuses on deploying both interceptor drones and first-person view (FPV) drones alongside robotic systems, artillery shells, and air defense systems along the front line.

To support this effort, Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal verified that the government is now ramping up domestic UAS production while fostering innovation through startup-led projects.

Part of it is an EU and Ukraine-backed innovation center in Kyiv that is helping develop new weapons, fund companies, and facilitate joint ventures with European partners.

Local firms are also collaborating with foreign manufacturers to expand production and strengthen ties with Europe’s defense sector.

Focus on Innovation, International Backing

President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this year that Ukraine plans to produce hundreds and eventually thousands of UAS in partnership with allied countries to counter Russia’s lethal Shahed platforms, with Ghana among the latest nations pledging support for the effort.

At a European strategy meeting earlier in September, Zelensky further highlighted the need for international backing, including strong armed forces, sufficient weapons, and reinforced sanctions against the aggressor, while praising allies such as Canadian Minister Chrystia Freeland for their steadfast support.

“What is needed is truly strong pressure — so that instead of aiming to occupy Ukraine or any other country, Putin’s goal becomes preserving his economy, his system, preserving what he has lived for all these years,” Zelensky stated at the event.

“Only together can we achieve peace. And only if we respond strongly to every question this war poses. Strongly. So that the objectives change.”
