AI, Security, and the Future: A Conversation With Charles Chen

AI is no longer just a tool; it’s becoming a central player in US diplomacy and national security.

Charles Chen, former Director of the State Department’s AI and Emerging Technology Office and now Senior Advisor at Resecurity, has spent nearly 30 years navigating the intersection of technology, intelligence, and cyber defense.

Headshot Charles Chen“AI is not just a technological innovation but a strategic asset,” Chen explained, describing how the State Department integrated AI into core operations to improve threat detection, automate routine tasks, and strengthen global partnerships.

The advances are striking. Real-time threat detection, predictive analysis, and automated incident triage are now possible at a scale and speed previously unimaginable.

Yet Chen cautions that risks remain: “AI systems must be transparent, explainable, and subject to human oversight.” Ethical and security concerns, alongside legacy system integration, make the challenge far from simple.

Looking ahead, Chen sees the future of national security as a partnership between humans and machines, explaining how AI can accelerate detection and automate routine tasks. “Yet humans remain essential for providing context, making strategic decisions, and ensuring responsible use,” he said.

In the coming years, the frontlines of national security may look very different, and Chen’s reflections hint at just how transformative human–machine partnerships could be.
