The Czech Republic has approved the purchase of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from KNDS Deutschland.
The 32.76-billion Czech koruna ($1.56-billion) purchase is part of a framework agreement with Germany, which includes a separate 1.49-billion koruna ($71-million) contract for vehicle customization.
The exchange rate reserve for the potential deal is set at 5 billion Czech koruna ($239 million).
The purchase includes self-defense and mine protection systems, along with integrated logistical support covering spare parts, support management, documentation, and training.
The framework, pending cabinet approval, allows for the purchase of an additional 14 tanks.
Additional Tanks
The move follows Prague’s donation of all 86 T-72M1 main battle tanks to Ukraine in response to Russia’s ongoing aggression.
The nation plans to purchase an additional 19 2A8s in four variants: engineering, recovery, bridge, and driver training.
A separate contract will be signed for the acquisition if Germany concludes negotiations with suppliers.
The country will receive between 61 and 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks in six variants.
Latest Leopard Variant
The tanks will match the German Army’s configuration, except for communications and liaison equipment, camouflage paint, national markings, and machine guns.
The 2A8 is the latest Leopard variant featuring additional armor protection, including the Trophy active protection system, and protection against cluster munitions.
It will retain the 120 mm L55 smoothbore cannon from the previous version, with a potential ammunition range extension and an upgraded fire control system.
“Tanks continue to have their unquestionable place on the modern battlefield and are an essential part of the modern army,” Chief of the General Staff of the Military of the Czech Republic, Karel Řehka, said.
“The quality of the Leopard 2A8 tank — from firepower to crew protection to technological sophistication — will ensure that the Czech Army will receive a top-notch tool for national defense.”
