Northrop, ROMARM to Co-Produce Ground-Based Radar for Romania

Northrop Grumman and Romanian state-owned defense company ROMARM have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly produce a ground-based radar for the Romanian Air Force.

The G/ATOR (Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar) is expected to deliver advanced capabilities against modern threats, including cruise missiles, remotely piloted aircraft, and vehicles, as well as share interoperability with NATO allies’ command and control infrastructures.

It will provide long-range 360-degree surveillance and fire control for air and missile defense using secure software, according to Greg Teitelbaum, Northrop’s VP of land and maritime sensors.

“Our industrial partnership with ROMARM will deliver a proven, ready-now solution to help strengthen Romania’s security against evolving threats,” he said.

Further details about the agreement, such as the financial value and work timeline, were not disclosed.

Northrop in Europe

This development is among the US defense giant’s latest deals struck to boost European defense.

In June, Northrop inked an agreement with Marshall to propose a solution for the UK’s next-generation Ground-Based Air Defense program, creating an integrated air defense system with local engineering and manufacturing resources.

Additionally, the American contractor recently expanded its co-production deal for medium-caliber ammunition with Lithuania.
