Norwegian Firm to Distribute New Sniper Rifle Scopes for Military

Norway has awarded Bertel O. Steen Defence & Security a contract to supply next-generation sniper rifle scopes for the armed forces.

The 92-million Norwegian kroner ($9 million) package includes the Thermis Mk2 thermal sight display built with day and night capability, enabling precision targeting and reconnaissance against foot soldiers, vehicles, and military equipment.

Upon arrival, the scopes will be integrated into the M107A1 12.7-millimeter anti-materiel rifles that the Norwegian military will receive from US weapons developer Barrett Firearms this summer as part of a contract signed in 2024.

The Thermis Mk2 will be produced by Greek firm Theon International and will be transferred to the Oslo-based distributor in September 2025.

‘Advanced’ Tool

The Thermis Mk2 consists of a built-in digital compass and clear resolution to support field of view over light vegetation and rapid threat detection.

In addition to its standard mounted sight function, the technology can serve as a handheld camera for short and long-range monitoring.

For streamlined operations, the system offers link-ready compatibility with existing digital management systems such as the Norwegian Battle Management System and the American Android Team Awareness Kit.

The Thermis Mk2 is powered by three AA cartridge-style batteries, has WiFi and Bluetooth connections, image and video capture, and up to eight hours of activation.

“The Armed Forces are now receiving state-of-the-art and technically advanced sights that will increase operational capability,” Norwegian Defence Materiel Land and Joint Capabilities Head Tomas Beck stated.
